A

Abdullah, Basoeki (1915-1993)
Brother of Abdullah Sudjono and second son of Abdullah Soerjosoebroto, a prominent landscape painter. He studied in the Netherlands, and he also visited Paris and Rome. He is best known as a portrait painter, but painted landscapes, fauna, flora and other themes as well. His works had been exhibited in Bangkok, Malaysia, Japan, the Netherlands, England and Portugal.

Adi, Sutjipto (B. 1957)
Born in Jember. He studied at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta from 1977-1981. He creates his works using photographs which he restructures in geometric shapes as to construct a cosmic impression.

Adolf, Gerard Pieter (1897-1968)
He was born in Semarang and studied architecture in the Netherlands. He returned to Indonesia in 1922 and then lived in Surabaya. He devoted himself to paintings there. He traveled extensively in Asia, Europe and Africa, including Japan, Rome and Middle East. He finally settled in the Netherlands and died in Den Bosch, Holland 1968.

Affandi(1907-1990)
He was the founder of the Himpunan Pelukis Masjarakat (Community's Artists Association) in 1946 and Himpunan Pelukis Rakyat (People's Artists Association) in 1947. In the early of 50s he travelled to India on a grant from Indian Government. He held-one man shows in several Indian cities, UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Italy. He returned to Indonesia in 1955 to teach painting and sculpture at ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta. He went to Honolulu in 1967 to participate in the first East-West Center Artist-in-Residence Programme. He received an Indonesian Art Award from the Ministry of Education and Culture (1969), the Dag Hammarskjoeld Prize from Italy (1977), and an Indonesian Government The First Class Merit (1978). Internationally, Affandi is the best-known Indonesian artist.

Affandi, Kartika (B. 1934)
Kartika studied at the Shantiniketan School of Art in 1950 until 1952, continued at the Polytechnic School of Art, London-England. Besides her formal study, her father Affandi, was her guide. When Affandi worked on the Mural of the East West Center University, Hawaii in 1967 she was appointed as her father's assistant. In 1968 she visited France on the invitation of the French Government to visit the museums and art centers of France. Her solo exhibitions was held in Jakarta, Paris, Rome, Brussels, Bangkok and Australia. She received some art awards from several art foundations. Kartika also participated in exhibitions with her father.

Al Bara, Basrizal (B. 1966)
Born in Bengkalis in April 1966. He participated in several exhibitions in Jakarta, Magelang, Yogyakarta, and Semarang.

Anton Kievits, Frederik(1887 - 1951)
Born in Bogor, Java, 10 September 1887. Painter and draughtsman, who lived and worked in Indonesia in the 1920 and 1930. In 1930 his Exhibition in Jakarta, Kunstzaal Kolff & Co (One Man Show); The Haque, Panorama Mesdag, 1949 (One Man Show). In April - May 1938 he participated in the 'Bondscollectie' exhibition in Jakarta. During World War II he was interned by the Japanese and put in a camp.The artist painted and drew landscapes depicting Indonesia, his memories from the Japanese camps and other subjects of his native country. He died in The Haque, 17 July 1951.

Apin, Mochtar (1923 – 1994)
Born in Padang Panjang. He studied at the University of Indonesia between 1948 until 1951. Upon his return to Indonesia, he taught at ITB until appointed as the professor of art. Later he continued his study to Amsterdam, Paris and Berlin.

Ardhani, J. Sodick (B. 1955)
Born in Temanggung, Central Java, 1955. He showed his painting talent since he was a child. In 1979 he joined the Sanggar Belukar, Karawang to perform his works in the exhibition at Karawang's Puspen Mas Building (1980). And 1998 he held is Solo exhibition in Jakarta and moved to Bali to study Balinese Themes.

Ardison (B. 1974)
Born in Sumatra. He studied at ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta, majoring in sculpture and graduated in 1995. He participated in several group exhibitions in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and Padang.

Asta, I Wayan (B. 1954)
Born in 1954. Consistently paints in Balinese style. Monkey are mostly depicted in his paintings.

Awiki(B. 1961)
In 1973 he started painting under Bani Amora and later under Sucipto. He continued his studies at the SMSFI / SSRI Fine Art High School, Yogyakarta before moving to Bali in 1980. He lived in Pejeng from 1980 to 1982, where he studied under Dullah. Since 1984, his style gradually evolved from naturalistic realism to more impressionistic representation, with strong colors, thick textures and spontaneous brush-strokes. He has actively participated in both group and solo exhibitions in Jakarta, Surabaya and Bali.

Aziz, Abdul (1928-2002)
He first studied social politics at Gajah Mada University in Yogyakarta from 1951- 1957, but then switched to art. He graduated in 1959 from ASRI / lndonesian Academy of Fine Arts. In 1959, he went to study in Italy on an Indonesian government grant. He settled in Bali in 1966 and worked as a lecturer in fine arts at Udayana University in Denpasar. He had participated in many exhibitions in Indonesia and USA.

B

Bagus Made, Ida (1915-1999)
He studied painting from Rudolf Bonnet and Dutch painters. He was a member of Pita Maha Artists Association. He received the Wijaya Kusuma art award from the local government and the Dharma Kusuma award from the Bali provincial government. His works are in collection of art center and galleries in Bali, and also Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam. He is famous for his portrayals of everyday life in Bali and for his mystical paintings of religious characters.

Bauer, Marius Alexander Jacques (1867 – 1932)
Pupil of the Academy of Arts in The Hague, who travelled to Russia, Egypt, Turkey, India and in 1925 and 1931 to Indonesia, where he participated in several exhibitions. His work was selected for the colonial exhibition in Paris in 1931 and destroyed by fire there. The artist is represented with his work in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, the Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam, the Municipal Museum in The Hague and other major Dutch museums. Bauer is considered to be one of the few Dutch orientalist.

Bedil, Dewa Putu (1921 - 1999)
He studied with the Dutch painter Rudolf Bonnet (1895-1978), and was a member of Pita Maha Society during the 30s. Most of his works are inspired by village life. They usually include large figures of people, especially their heads and upper bodies, in soft pastel colors. These were aesthetic features which he learned from Bonnet. His work are in the collections of the Art Centre in Denpasar, the Puri Lukisan Museum in Ubud, the Rijksmuseum Voor Volkenkunde in Leiden, and the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam. His work was included in the Art of Bali exhibition held in 1988 at the East-West Centre in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Bettinger, Gustave (1857 - 1934)
Born in Orleans, France. He was taught by Boulanger, Vibert, and Le Febvre. He married a Dutch lady and in 1909 he came to Indonesia to work on a plantation which owned by his wife’s family.

Blanco, Antonio (1927-1999)
Descendant of a family originally from Catalonia, Spain, Blanco was born in the Philippines. He studied at the Fine Arts Academy in New York, and was later based in Florida and California. Since 1952 he lived in Ubud, Bali. He had been honored by several international art organizations, including the Tiffany Fellowship, New York and La Cofradia del Arros, Spain.

Bonnet, Johan Rudolf (1895-1978)
He studied art in Amsterdam. He visited Italy in the early 20s, where he met W.O. J. Nieuwenkamp, who told him about Bali. He visited Indonesia in 1936 and stayed in Bali from 1931 until 1941. He founded together with Walter Spies the Pita Maha Artist's Association in 1936 (until 1942) to promote and stimulate young Balinese artists and maintain a high artistic level of its members. Bonnet returned to Bali in 1947 and was forced to leave Indonesia in 1958. He helped establishing the Museum Puri Lukisan. His works are amongst the collections of former President Sukarno, the Neka Museum, the Agung Rai Fine Art Gallery, the Rijksmuseum Kroller-Muller in Otterlo and the Sinergmuseum in Laren.

Boonyavanishkul, Rearngsak (B. 1961)
He studied at Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts, Slipakom University, Bangkok, Thailand in 1986 and graduated with a BFA degree.

Buana, Stefan (B. ?)
Born in Padang Panjang, West Sumatra. Still studying in ISI, Yogyakarta. His paintings sometimes depicted humorously with symbols. His brushstrokes and strong lines, with surrealist-expressionist style of painting seems very sensitive towards the ups and dows of social and political condition.

C

Cahya, Wayan (B. 1965)
He studied painting at ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta from 1985-1992. He also studied photography in order to be able to paint realistically. He has participated in group exhibitions in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Solo and Surabaya since 1987.

CHAN, ERIC (B. 1975)
Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He studied art in Singapore and Auctralia. He received his Diploma of Fine Art at the LASALLE-SIA College of the Art and Master of Fine Art (painting) at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. The award winning works of Eric Chan are based on moving shapes. The act of capturing the subject on canvas, be it flower, plant or landscape, is skin to a photographer immortalising a fleeting moment - a glimpse of space in time. Christine, Ay Tjoe (B. 1973)
Born in Bandung, West Java, 1973. She Took Her Formal Study At The Bandung Institute OF Technology (ITB), Mojoring The Faculty OF Fine Arts And Design Graduated In 1997. Since 1994, She Exhibited Her Work in Indonesia as well as Outside the Country among others in Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea, China, France and United Kingdom. Since 2001, She had performance her Solo Exhibitions in several Major Cities In Indonesia such as, Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Bandung.

Chua, Mia Tee (B. 1931)
He graduated from the Nangyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1952 and later became a professional oil painter and a sculptor. He also served for many years as President of the Alumni Association of NAFA as well as on the selection board of creative art awards. He has held numerous solo exhibitions; works could be found in the collections of many private and public sectors.

Cock, Aart Johannes (1905-..?)
Born in Menade, Sulawesi (Celebes), 13 May 1905. He attended the academy of arts in The Haque. The artist lived and worked in Medan, Sumatra, until 1939. In that same year he participated in the ‘Vrije Tentoonstelling’ (Free Exhibition) organized by the ‘Bataviasche Kunstkring’in Jakarta. After World War II he lived in Makassar, Sulawesi, until 1950; he then settled in The Haque. Painter, draughtsman, industrial artist and drawing teacher.

Covarrubias, Miguel (1904-1957)
First went to Bali in 1930 under a Guggenheim Fellowship, during this stay he gathered materials for his book ‘Island of Bali’ that was published in 1938 and remains a classic to this day. He then became a good friend of Walter Spies. He was an international traveller and his works were well-known in USA through magazine illustrations. He was also a professor of art history in the National School of Anthropology in Mexico City.

Dake Jr, Carel Lodewijk (1886 - 1946)

He was taught by his father, the artist C.L. Dake, and also studied painting with E. Pieters, A.M. Gorter and H.M. Krabbe in Laren, The Netherlands. He visited Indonesia in 1912, and spent time in Java, Sumatra and Bali. He created three large dioramas depicting Indonesia for the world fair of San Francisco in 1915. He had solo exhibitions in Bogor and Bandung in 1919 and in Jakarta in 1933.

De Ruiter de Witt, Maria (B. 1947)

The artist specialized in the pastel technique after receiving classes from the Dutch draughtsman Sierk Schroeder. In September 1988 she was awarded with the first prize of Societe des Pastellistes de France', followed by the Prix d'Honneur du Salon International du Pastel in 1989. In 1992, she was appointed Maitre du Pastel by the Societe des Pastellistes. In the same year, she won a bronze medal of the Societe des Artistes Francais.

Dezentje, Ernest (1885-1972)

Self-taught Dutch artist of French origin, born in Jatinegara, Java. He was a member of the Bataviasche Kunstkring and participated in several of their exhibitions. He had solo exhibitions in Jakarta in 1936, 1937, 1938 and 1939. After World War II he became an Indonesian citizen. Former President Soekamo presented his paintings to President Tito of Yugoslavia and Russian leaders.

Dhay, W.T (B. 1937)

Born in Lumajang, East Java. He was a realist-impressionist painter around 60’s who then learned oil painting from late artist Nurdin BS. With fine brushstrokes and strong colours, his object mostly depicted the crowd of traditional markets, as well as the life of fishermen and farmers within. He also likes to paint landscapes as the beauty of his surrounding nature.

Djamin, Nasjah (1924-1999)

Educated at MULO, he started painting in 1946 in Yogyakarta during the Indonesian Struggle for Independence. He went to Yogyakarta because he was attracted by the works of Sudjojono, Affandi and Kartono Yudhokusumo. In 1946 he joined the Pasukan Obor art studio where he produced propaganda posters and joined Sudjojono’s Seniman Indonesia Muda / Young Indonesian Artists where he studied under Sudjojono, Affandi and Sudarso. He moved to Jakarta in 1949 – 1952, where he attended Gabungan Pelukis Indonesia / Indonesian Painter’s Group and worked as an illustrator for the Balai Pustaka publishing house. After his return to Yogyakarta in 1952, he worked as a civil servant in the Art Division / Directorate, Department of Education and Culture. He participated in national and international exhibitions: he had his first solo exhibition in 1960 at the Embassy of Argentina in Jakarta, and another in 1978 at the Taman Ismail Marzuki Art Center in Jakarta. He was also a writer, poet, novelist and writer of children’s book as well as being an expert in designing stage décor for theatre, film and television productions.

Djaya, Otto (1916 – 2002)

He was born in Rangkasbitung, Banten in 1916. He learned to paint at the PERSAGI atelier during the Dutch colonial period. His elder brother Agus Djaya was at that time chairman of this first Indonesian Painters Union. During the Japanese occupation he took part in the armed struggle for the independence as major in the Indonesian army. After incapacitated as an army officer, he retreated from the army and returned to his original habitat: “the world of fine art.” After the proclamation he got the opportunity to study in Amsterdam, Holland. He also made a complete study tour around Europe. He also participated in the grand prix de peinture de Monaco in Monte Carlo, and the Biennale of Sao Paolo in Brazil. He often took part in several solo and joint exhibitions in Indonesia as well as abroad.

Djirna, I Made (B. 1957)

He studied at ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta. He is a member of the Sanggar Dewata Indonesians Kelompok Tujuh. He received the Lempad Prize and Pratisara Affandi Adhi Karya. His works range from pure abstraction to simplified figures inspired by primitive art. He has participated in exhibitions in the Netherlands, USA, Singapore and Switzerland.

Djunaedi, Fadjar (B. 1970)
The artist studied painting at IKIP Malang and graduated in 1994. He has participated in several exhibitions in Jakarta, Bandung, Malang, Surabaya, and Bali.

Do, Duy Tuan(B. 1949)
Born in Thuan Thien Hue, Vietnam, 1954. He graduated from Hue's Fine Arts College. He has won the Arts National Award 1996-2000 and won the Vietnam Arts Award 2001 / Asian 2002-Philip Morris, participated numerous painting exhibition in Vietnam and abroad, solo exhibition in Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City, Fine Arts Museum of Hanoi and various private collections.

Does, Willem Jan Pieter Van Der (1889-1966)
Born in Retterdam, 20 April 1889. He came to Indonesia ca 1918 as a civil servant to survey the country. In this function he traveled all over the archipelago. The artist participated in several group-exhibitions in Jakarta, Medan and Surabaya between 1918 and 1938.

Dono, Heri (B. 1960)
He studied at ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta from 1980-1987. He also studied shadow puppetry with Sukasman in Yogyakarta from 1987-1988. He has had solo and group exhibitions in Indonesia, Netherlands, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, USA and the UK. He received an award as Best Young Painter from the Alliance Francaise and Bandung Institute of Technology in 1989; Lempad Prize from Sanggar Dewata Indonesia in 1992; Prince Claus Award in 1988; UNESCO Prize for International Art Biennial, Shanghai, China in 2000; and the 2nd Annual Enku Grand Awards, Gifu Prefectural Government, Japan in 2002. He is internationally known for his contemporary installation work.

Dooijewaard, Willem (1892-1980)
Born in Amsterdam, He was educated at the Amsterdam Arts and Crafts School. He first visited Indonesia in 1913 where he worked on a plantation in Sumatera. His second trip to Indonesia in 1919 bought him to Bali. Together with Roland Strasser, hespent over a year traveling through China, Mongolia, Japan and North Africa. Dooijewaard was a typical artist traveller who immersed him in the local cultures and who reached his highest artistic level when inspired by these different cultures.

Duatmika, I Made (B. 1970)
He studied art at the Indonesia Fine Art College (STSI) Denpasar, Bali. His first solo exhibition was held at Mon Décor Gallery, Jakarta in 1999. In 1993 he joined the KAMASRA group. He has exhibited his works in Australia, Holland and also won the Philip Morris Indonesia Art Awards.

Dullah(1919-1996)
He studied painting with Affandi and Sudjojono. During the late 40s he documented the Indonesian Revolution and Struggle for Independence through his paintings. In the 50s he was the official painter for Indonesia's first president, Soekarno. Dullah was also the first curator of Soekarno's art collection and he coordinated the publication of the first edition of the collection catalogue in 1956. He helped establishing Himpunan Budaya Surakarta / Surakarta Cultural Foundation in 1950. In 1988 he opened the Dullah Museum in Solo, which exhibits modern Indonesian paintings. His works had been shown in exhibitions in Indonesia and abroad, including a solo exhibition in Melbourne, Australia in 1977.

Dwihartanto, Arin (B. 1978)
He studied at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). He has intensely explorer the “body” as the subject matter for his artworks. In 1999 he received an award of ASEAN Philips Morris Art Award, National Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

E

Eland, Leonardus Joseph (1884-1952)
Self-taught artist who lived and worked in Indonesia until 1920. He visited Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, Bali and other islands. He participated in several exhibitions organized by the Bataviasche Kunstkring. He settled in The Hague in 1920, and later returned to Indonesia for a brief period in 1929 to prepare some huge Indonesian dioramas that he made for several world fairs.

EDUARD (EDO POP)
Born 1972 in Palembang, South Sumatra. Graduate of ISI / Indonesian Institute of Arts, Yogyakarta. He has had solo exhibitions in Denmark (1996) and Indonesia (2000 & 2002), and has participated in group exhibitions in USA, Canada and Indonesia. Edo Pop is a member of two artists' groups based in Yogyakarta: Sanggar Driya Manunggal and Sanggar Bidar Sriwijaya.

Erawan, Nyoman (B. 1958)
Born in Sukawati, Gianyar, Bali. He graduated from Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) Yogyakarta. In 1982 he got a Lempad Grand Prize from Sanggar Dewata Indonesia and in 1993 he was also one of the Philip Morris Art Awards finalists.

F

Fadli, Pardoli (B. 1971)
He was born in Cilacap, C. Java in 1971. He studied fine art at the ASRI – ISI, Yogyakarta. He has been participated in several group exhibitions in 1995, locally and internationally; Australia, Singapore, Switzerland. He held his first solo exhibition at Metro Inn Hotel, Perth, Australia in 1997.

Faisal (B. ?)
Born in Solo. He studied at ASRI (now ISI) and he was influenced by the Cobra group. He achieved several awards, best sketch in 1990, best artwork in 1990, and Medaille du Conseil Generale Prix D’honneur L Duren from France in 1991.

Faizin(B. 1973)
A self-taught artist who started to exhibit his works in several cities in Java, Indonesia. He became one of the Philip Morris Art Awards finalists in 1999, he became one of the Philip Morris Art Awards finalists.

Fantje, I (B. 1931)
He studied in Jakarta and Europe. In 1948 he was asked by the Indian society in Indonesia to paint a portrait of PANDIT JAWAHRLAL NEHRU. In 1962 he embarked on a study tour in Europe and in 1967 of south east asia and japan for exhibition of fine art. He has held several exhibitions in the region. He painted still-life as his main subject matter.

G

Gaudez, Adrien Etienne (1845 – 1902)
He studied under Jouffroy and began exhibiting at the Salon in 1864, winning a third class medal that year and a first class medal in 1881. He specialized in monuments and large groups of statuary, but also sculpted portrait reliefs and busts.

Gunarsa, Nyoman (B. 1944)
He grew up in an ancient painting tradition in Klungkung and the influences of art and theatre of the Hindu-Balinese culture is evident in his paintings. He graduated from Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) Yogyakarta in 1976 and subsequently became an instructor there. He participated in numerous international exhibitions in Japan, Europe, and the United States. His paintings have been collected many museums around the world. He also established his own museums, The Nyoman Gunarsa Indonesian Contemporary Painting Museum in Yogyakarta, and Classical Balinese Painting Museum in Klungkung, Bali. Among his awards are the Prastisara Affandi Adikarya (1976), in the Biennale Indonesian Art Exhibition (1978 and 1980) and the Lempad Prize (1980). For his efforts in developing and preserving the visual arts, he received the Dharma Kusuma Award from the Balinese Government in 1995. In 1988, Gunarsa was a visiting artist with the Art of Bali exhibition held in Honolulu at East-West Centre.

Gunawan, Hanjaya (B. 1954)
He studied painting in Surakarta Culture Assosiation under Dullah, and has participated in many exhibitions in ASEAN countries. His solo exhibitions was in Taman Ismail Marzuki in 1979. One of his paintings, 2.5 by 19 m size, was exhibited in Asean secretariat building in Jakarta.

Gunawan, Hendra (1918-1983)
As a teenager, Hendra Gunawan painted props and scenery for a theater group. He also studied under Wahdi. In 1940 he joined the Five Painters Group in Bandung along with Affandi, Barli, Sudarso and Wahdi. During the Japanese occupation, he taught painting at the Keimin Bunka Shidoso Cultural Centre in Jakarta. The Revolution found Hendra Gunawan in Yogyakarta where he fought in the Indonesian army. He established Pelukis Rakyat / People’s Painters in 1947, and taught painting and sculpture in ASRI / Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts, Yogyakarta from 1950-1957. Hendra became a member of the central committee of the communist-sponsored art organization LEKRA / People’s Cultural Institute. In 1981 he settled in Bali and held a solo exhibition at the Art Centre in Denpasar the following year.

H

Hanafy (B. 1960)
Born in Purworejo and studied at The Indonesian Fine Art School (SSRI) in Yogyakarta. He held is first solo exhibition in Jakarta 1996.

Hara, Eddie (B. 1957)
He first studied painting at
ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta, and then continued his education at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunst Enschede, the Netherlands. He has had solo and group exhibitions in Indonesia and several countries abroad.

Hayatuddin(B. 1972)
He was one of the Big Five finalist from the Philip Morris Art Awards in 2000 and so many joint and single exhibition in Indonesia. He won the best sketch Academy Art ISI Yogyakarta Awards.

Hidayat (B. 1969)
He graduated from ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta in 1996. Since very young, Hidayat had been active in participating in many painting competitions and had won numerous awards for himself. In 1986, he won the best sketch and watercolor from the FSRD ISI Competition (Jurusan Seni Murni). He also achieved the best painting award during the exhibition of Islami in Ajiyasa Building. He is one of the Philip Morris Art Awards finalist.

Ho, Huu Thu(B. 1940)
A graduate of the national fine arts college of Saigon (class of 1965), he later taught there. Among his many awards are the 1959 ESSO silver medal and the second prize at the national fine arts competition in 1990.

Hofker, Willem Gerard (1902-1981)
He was a student of the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. He came to Indonesia in 1938 and visited Batavia, Bandung, Bogor and Bali. Finally, he settled in Bali at the village near Denpasar, then to Ubud. In Ubud he became acquainted with Rudolf Bonnet, a Dutch painter, and became his good company. During the Japanese occupation, Hofker and Bonnet were interned in Denpasar, then to Sulawesi (1943). Hofker went back to his homeland, Netherlands, in 1946 after being rejected from returning to Bali during the physical revolution.

Huang, Anton (1935-1985)
He began learning to paint at the age of twenty one under the guidance of Kartono Yudhokusumo at Sanggar Seniman (Artist’s Society) and then with Barli. He took part in group exhibitions in Jakarta, Bandung and Surabaya in 1959. Exhibitions of his works were held in Indonesia, Denmark, Stuttgart, and Netherlands. His first solo exhibition was held in Jakarta in 1973.

Husner, Paul (B. 1942)
He studied graphic art and painting in Amsterdam in 1965 - 1967. He has received Dutch awards such as the Urio Prijs in 1969; Wilink van Collen Prijs in 1971; the Jeanne Bieruma Oosting Prijs in 1974; and the Art Medaille in 1987. From 1980 - 1988 he was Professor at the National Academy of Arts in Amsterdam where he taught drawing and painting. He has had solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions in the Netherlands, Switzerland, USA, Singapore and Indonesia.

Ibrahim, Noor (B. 1966)
He graduated from
ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta. He has had solo exhibitions in Yogyakarta and Surabaya, and has participated in group exhibitions throughout Indonesia.

Imandt, Wihelminus Jean Frederic (1882 - 1967)
He stayed in Indonesia from 1908 until 1928, traveling through Archipelago. In 1935 he returned until 1946. The painter had participated in several exhibitions of the Bataviasche Kunstkring in Jakarta from 1920 to 1925. His work is represented in the collection of the former President Soekarno.

Irsam (B. 1942)
Born in Klaten, Central Java. He studied at Indonesia Art Academy (ASRI) Yogyakarta. He paints in decorative style. He has participated actively in exhibitions in Jakarta, and abroad. He has obtained a prize at the Jakarta Biennial.

Israels, Isaac Lazarus (1865-1934)
Son of an artist, Jozef Israels, was a pupil of the academy of arts in The Hague and was taught at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. He visited Indonesia in 1921- 1922 to meet his friend, the artist Jan Veth. After staying in Jakarta,Yogyakarta (where he was allowed to paint inside the Kraton) and Bali, he returned to The Netherlands in 1922 and finally settled in The Hague. His work was selected for the International Colonial Exhibition in Paris in 1931, which was unfortunately destroyed by fire. Painter, draughtsman, watercolourist and graphic artist, who is considered one of the most important representatives of Dutch impressionism. Several of his paintings and sketches, including Indonesian work, are in the collection of the Haags Gemeentemuseum in The Hague.

Iskandar, Popo (1927-1999)
He began painting in 1944 as a poster painter for the information service of Indonesian Armed Forces. He studied at the Institute of Technology Bandung in 1958. His bold, graphic works feature figures with bright colours. A writer and art critic, lectured at the Teachers Training College Bandung, he was a life-member of the Academy of Jakarta. He was awarded the Anugerah Seni Indonesia in 1980.

Jati, Dewa Nyoman (B. 1940)
He learned painting at a very young age, working together with Dewa Putu Bedil. He had participated actively in exhibitions in Jakarta, European countries, and Australia. His works are represented in the collection of Neka Art Museum in Bali.

K

Kahono, Dandung B. (B. 1949)
Born in Magelang. Graduated from STSRI – ASRI Yogyakarta Majoring Painting in 1971. And continued his studies to Technology Institute of Bandung in Graphic Design Faculty (1972 – 1978). His artworks were collected by local and foreign collector. He participated in several group exhibitions both local and abroad. Group exhibition in Japan at Kochi, Hiroshima and Kobe (2001), Join exhibition with Indonesia – Japan Association at Agung Rai Gallery Bali (2002), with Korean Painters Association at Dharmawangsa Hotel (2004).

Kasta, I Ketut (B. 1945)
Born in Peliatan, Ubud. He paints in a traditional Ubud style, featuring the life in Bali. He has participated in numerous exhibitions in Jakarta.

Kay, It (1938-1977)
The artist sought much inspiration from Balinese wood carvings and this influence can be seen in his designs in the terracotta mural and ceramic sculptures at the Bali Hyatt International Hotel and the Sanur Beach Hotel. Exhibitions of his works have been held throughout Indonesia and in Australia in 1966 and 1977. His works are in the collections of the Puri Lukisan Museum in Ubud, the Art Centre in Denpasar, and the Solander Gallery in Australia.

Kemp, P.H. Van Der (ca. 1919)
Dutch.
Painter and draughtsman, active in Medan, Sumatra, ca 1919. The artist, listed as ‘Dr.’, participated in an exhibition organized by the ‘Delische Kunstring’ in October 1919. No further reference.

Kerton, Sudjana (1922-1994)
He worked as journalist-artist for the newspaper Patriot, Yogyakarta, under Usmar Ismail from 1945-1949. He was one of the first Indonesian artists to win fellowship in Amsterdam and Paris and later received a scholarship to study at the Arts Students League, New York. In the late 70s, he returned to Indonesia and built a studio-gallery Sanggar Luhur, on Dago hill, overlooking Bandung. His work shows a deep concern for the common people in Indonesia.

Kim Bing, Kho (B. 1907)
A self-taught artist, he went to Jakarta to find a job in 1925. By 1929 he started to study at Academy of Fine Art in Belgium, where he was taught by the Dutch artist W. Paerels. He then worked in Paris for a year and held a few exhibitions there. In 1947 he went back to Malang. His works are very much influenced by the European impressionists.

Kirana, Djaja Tjandra (B. 1944)
His art works draw heavily for inspiration from the traditional images of Bali. He introduces ornamental objects and shapes in an honest and straight forward manner with unique characteristic, which make his works interesting in terms of the visual.

Knudslien, Roderick (B. 1954)
Born: Ryley, Alberta, Canada. Travelled and lived outside of Canada for several years before attending the University of Alberta to complete a B.F.A. Currently paints in Canada, and Indonesia.

Koto, Syahrizal (B. 1960)
He studied sculpture at ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta. He has had several solo and group exhibitions in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and Magelang.

Kowapitaktak(Kova), Bencharong ( B. 1973)
He obtained his Bachelor of fine Art from Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts from Chulalongkom University Thailand and also Master of Fine Art from Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Fine Arts, Silpakom University. He has won several awards and honours since 1992, among which are 3rd Prize, Bronze Medal, 16th Bualuang Painting Contest by Bangkok Bank, winner at 2nd Panasonic Contemporary Painting Exhibition in 1996, Top Award Winner, Art Exhibition of Thailand Art Award 1997 by Philip Morris Group Companies, Special prize by Booneawd Brewery in 1998. He has participated in over 30 events in Thailand.

Krijono (B. 1951)
Born in an artist family. His mother is a Batik Factory owner and his father is a painting collector who later established the “ Harris” Art Gallery in 1971. He studied at the Indonesian Academy of Art (ASRI), Yogyakarta in 1970.

Kristiandana, Agapetus A. (B. 1968)

Beside a painter, he is also well known as a choreographer. He obtained his formal education from Indonesia Art Academy (ASRI) Yogyakarta and he has had several exhibitions in many countries. He received awards from Indonesian & Bangladesh Government, ASEAN, and also from Pope Paul VI.

Laksono, Win Dwi (B. 1957)
Graduated from ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta. His creations have a tendency in deformation, and more emphasizing in gesture. Some of his public creation is sculpture in Museum Keprajuritan TMII (1986) and Tugu Pahlawan in Surabaya (1998).

Le Mayeur De Merpres, Adrien-Jean (1880-1958)
Le Mayeur studied painting from his father and was also a pupil of Blanc – Garin in Brussels, Belgium. He settled in Bali in 1932 and three years later he married Ni Pollok, a Balinese dancer who was the model for many his paintings. In 1958 when he became seriously ill, he returned to Brussels and died there.

Le, Pho (1907 – 2001)
He first studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts de l’Indochine founded by Victor Tardieu. Then he continued his study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris in 1931. He returned to Vietnam from 1932 to 1937, but after that he chose to settle down in France. He painted flowers and portraits of women and children. He had held many exhibitions in Paris, throughout France, New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Buenos Aires.

Le, Tanh Son(B. 1962)
Le Thanh Son was born in Hanoi in 1962 and graduated from the Hanoi College of Drama and Cinematography in 1986. He prefers to fill the canvases with clear, bright colours in an impressionistic style and an intimate atmosphere that can be found in villages around Hanoi. Thanh Son has participated in several shows in Vietnam and also in Singapore (1995), Hong Kong (1996, 1997), and Great Britain (2001).

Lee, Man Fong(1913 – 1988)
In 1916, his family moved from Canton to Singapore. He began his studies of painting in Singapore, and in 1932 he moved to Jakarta where he started an advertising agency and worked as a commercial artist. In 1941 he visited Bali and painted there for a brief period; in the same year he had a solo exhibition in Jakarta. In 1947 he was awarded the Malino grant by the Dutch Governor-General to study painting in Netherlands and he stayed there until 1952. He traveled widely during those years and held several solo exhibitions. In 1955 he founded the Yin Hua artist’s association, and served as chairman. He became a Presidential Palace painter for the former Indonesian President Soekarno in 1961. In 1964, together with Lim Wasim he compiled a 5-volume edition of the Soekarno Collection in which many of his own works are featured.

Li, Fu Yuan (B. 1942)
He graduated from the Fine Art Faculty of Beijing Art academy in 1963 and in 1963 – 1992 he was appointed lecturer at Beijing Art Professional Training College.

Linggar, Josephine (B. 1943)
Born in Jember, East Java, in 1943. She’s known as a fashion designer, and an owner of a garment business and café-gallery. She often takes part in group exhibitions in Jakarta and Singapore among other cities. Once she ran her solo exhibition in Switzerland. Her book on art is Primadonna. A finalist of Indofood Art Awards 2002.

M

M Japin(B. 1959)
M. Japin was born in Ambarawa, Central Java, 23 February 1959. Japin learned painting since primary school and until now still exists with his naturalist style. Japin started his painting career in Ubud, Bali, 1990. He also joined Kelompok Sepuluh"" (Group of ten) of Ambarawa artists. From 1990 until now Japin participated in group exhibitions in several cities in Indonesia. His art works also collected by local as well as overseas collector. Japin's favorite objects are about traditional games and activities of children in rural area, which are almost extinct from the villagers in Indonesia. Japin's art works are sold in Masterpiece auction.

Mangu Putra, Gusti Agung (B. 1963)
He graduated from ISI / Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Yogyakarta in 1990, majoring in Visual Communication Design. He received awards for Best Work in Visual Communication Design at Dies Natalis IV (1988) and VI (1990) at ISI Yogyakarta; and was one of the Top Ten prize winner of the Indonesian Art Awards in 1994. He worked as a graphic designer from 1990-1998. He has had solo and group exhibitions in Bali, Jakarta, and Singapore.

Marsoyo(B. 1973)
Marsoyo was born in Magelang, Central Java, 1973.He graduated from Art High School (SMSR) Yogyakarta. The Activities: 1993-Group Exhibition at Post and Telecommunication Department, Yogyakarta. Join Exhibition-Yogyakarta-Kyoto. 1994-Young Artist Exhibition at Purna Budaya, Yogyakarta. 2002-Group Exhibition-SMSR Anniversary at Benteng Vrederberg, Yogyakarta. Martadireja, Roedyat (1930 - 2002)
He studied Fine Arts at the Institut Teknologi Bandung in 1949. Since 1951, he started exhibiting both individually and collectively, featuring cubistic figures and landscapes.

Masriadi, Nyoman (B. 1973)
Masriadi left his studies at the Indonesia Fine Art Institute Yogyakarta before graduating. Since 1993, he has participated in numerous exhibitions of the group Sanggar Dewata in Bali, Yogyakarta and Surakarta. He participated in Yogyakarta’s Biennial in 1999. He received a number of awards from the Indonesia Art Institute, Yogyakarta.

Meier, Theo (1908 -1982)
He studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel and the academies of arts in Berlin and Dresden. He traveled in the 30s to the South Pacific and eventually settled in Bali in 1936 where he would stay, with some intervals until 1957. Then he settled in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The artist participated in the Bali Exhibition organized by the Bataviasche Kunstkring in Jakarta in 1939. His works are represented in the collections of the former President Sukarno, the Neka Museum in Ubud Bali, the Agung Rai Fine Art Gallery in Peliatan, Bali and the Kunstmuseum in Basel, Switzerland.

Mene, Pierre Jules (1801 – 1871)
Apart from a few tips from Rene Compaire, he was self-taught as a sculptor but built up a large reputation as an Animalier, producing figures which he cast in bronze himself. He established his own foundry in 1838 and thereafter had thriving business in turning out small bronze d’ameublement by the sand – cast process. He won a second class medal in 1848 and first class medals in 1852 and 1861, receiving also the Legion d’Honneur in the later year. He also exhibited at the Great Exhibitions of 1851 and 1862 in London and many of his groups were designed with the British market in mind.

Menendez, Diego (B. 1956)
Born in Buenos Aires (Argentina). He studied at the art academy in Buenos Aires, then moved to France in 1981. He received awards from France in 1987, 1993 and 1995. He had many exhibitions, either group or solo, mostly in France and other European countries since 1982 and during 2000 to 2002 he started to exhibit his paintings in Jakarta. Last time was in Canna Gallery in 2002.

Menno, Simon Jacobus van Meeteren Brouwer (1882-1974)
After studying at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, Menno settled in Medan, Sumatra in 1910 and then he returned to the Netherlands in 1922. An illustrator and cartoonist, he was also a painter, draughtsman and watercolourist. His works can be seen in the Amsterdam and Rotterdam museums.

Mokoh, Dewa Putu (B. 1936)
He studied painting under Gusti Ketut Kobot. Later he joined the Kelompok Pelukis Pengosekan and always participated in numerous art exhibitions in Indonesia and other countries.

Moerdowo, Dr. R. (B. 1919)
Born in Yogyakarta, 1919. After Independence Day of Indonesian Republic, he formed HBS (Himpunan Budaya Surakarta) at Solo. He also became a National Comitee for UNESCO. He was the head of art department at Udayana University and also become a teacher for art critics and art history. His works had been exhibited in many local galleries and international forums. He was also known as a writer, some of them are “Ceremonies in Bali” and “Reflection on Indonesian Arts and Culture”

Moreau, Louis Auguste (1855 – 1919)
He studied under his father, Aime Millet, A. Dumont and J. Thomas and his works were exhibited at the Salon, winning a third class medal in 1877 and a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1900. He specialized in allegorical and classical groups, statuettes of historic personalities and busts of his contemporaries.

Murti, Ayu Arista (B. 1979)
Born in Surabaya, 14 Desember 1979, she is student of Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Indonesia Institute of Arts (ISI), Yogyakarta. She has been in many group exhibitions from 2002 to 2005, and she has received awards from 1996 to 2003.

Mystkowsky, Ceszlaw (1898-1938)
He studied fine art in Moscow, Warsaw and Paris. Then he went to Indonesia with his Dutch wife, where they settled in Sindang Laya, Java, in 1928. Some of his large Indonesian paintings were exhibited at the International Colonial Exhibition in Paris 1931. Solo exhibitions of his work were held in Jakarta and he also had a solo show in Amsterdam.

N

Ngantung, Henk (1921 –1994)
Born in Bogor, his parents were from Tomohon, Minahasa, North Sulawesi. He began painting in 1934 and he had his first solo exhibition in Tomohon in 1936, after which he went to Java. From 1937-41 he studied with the Dutch painter, Willem F.M. Bosschaert and Austrian artist Rudolf Wenghart in Bandung. He had a solo exhibition at Hotel Savoy-homann, Bandung in 1939. He was a member of POETERA/PEOPLE’S ACTIVITY CENTRE and later studied at Keimin Bunka Shidoso cultural centre in Jakarta 1942-1944. In 1946 he was a co-founder of the gelanggang arts organization. In 1947 he had a solo exhibition at the hotel des Indes, Jakarta. In the 1950s and 1960s he was involved in the communist-sponsored art organization LEKRA / PEOPLE’S CULTURAL INSTITUTE and participated in cultural missions to the soviet union and china. He was vice-governor of Jakarta from 1960 – 1964 and governor of Jakarta in 1964 – 1965.

Nashar(B. 1928)
He studied painting with S. Sudjojono and Affandi. He co-founded and taught at IKJ/Jakarta Institute of the Arts from 1970 – 1972 and from 1979 – 1991, and was a member of DKJ / Jakarta Arts Council, 1973 – 1976. His works have spontaneous strokes and lines, indicating his rejection of technique, aesthetics and concepts (“three non’s: non-teknik, non-estetik & non-konsep”). He participated in numerous exhibitions, including the Festival of Indonesia, USA, 1990 – 1992 and group exhibitions, at the Gate Foundation, Amsterdam, Holland, 1993.

Nasirun (B. 1965)
He studied at the Indonesia Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta. He has won many prizes from ASRI. In 1997 his work was selected as one of the five best paintings at Yayasan Seni Rupa Indonesia Philip Morris Indonesian Art Awards.

Natalsya, Amrus (B. 1933)
A sculptor and painter, Amrus Natalsya graduated from ASRI / Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts,Yogyakarta in 1962. ln 1961 together with Sutopo, Isa Hasanda, Misbach, Djokopekik, Gumelar and others, he founded the Sanggar Bumi Tarung in Yogyakarta. He was a member of LEKRA / People's Cultural Institute and in the communist purge that followed the abortive coup of October 1965 he was imprisoned and banned from major exhibitions.

Neif, Arifien (B. 1955)
He moved to Jakarta in the 70s. It was only in the mid 80s he took on painting professionally. His eye for aesthetics geared him into interior design and soon architectural and interior design elements appeared as part of the scenes he painted. He was fascinated with the works of European artists like Matisse, Chagall, and Bosch, and equally admired the paintings of Sudjojono, the founder of Persagi.

Nuarta, Nyoman (B. 1951)
He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Institute of Technology Bandung, majoring in sculpture. In 1979 he became involved in the Gerakan Seni Rupa Baru lndonesia (Indonesia New Art Movement). He has held numerous solo exhibitions in Indonesia and abroad. Some of his pieces such as Proklamator Indonesia and Arjuna Wiwaha, have become the landmarks of Jakarta. Currently he is preparing the Garuda Wisnu Kencana monument in Bali.

Nugroho, Asri (B. 1952)
He learnt the art from his father. Although Asri Nugroho did not have formal training in art, but he learnt from few Surabaya senior artists such as Bambang Soegeng and O.H. Supono. He has had few solo and group exhibitions since 1983.

Nurhadi, Didik (B. 1972)
He graduated from
ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta, in 1999. There is something unique about his work that the human figures there in are obese. His works are humorous but disturbing parody. He has had several solo exhibitions in Yogyakarta.

Nurwanto, Ibnu (B. 1957)
He graduated from Institute of Fine Art, Jakarta. He is known as a sculptor who loyal to wood as he believes that wood close to human being but his works also made of bronze or fiber as a replica of the works of wood for socialization purpose. He has actively participated in several exhibitions in Jakarta.

Nyoman Widnyana (Gung Man), I Gusti (B. 1956)
He was born in Sanglah, Denpasar, Bali in 1956. He studied art at the SRRI, Denpasar Bali. He also studied to paint in Ubud style under the guidance of Mangku Nyoman Lesug at the Neka Art Gallery. He continued his study at the Art and Design faculty at Udayana University, Bali. He met Arie Smit and he motivated Gung Man to carry on painting. He has been participated in a lot of group exhibitions since 1982 and won some awards at local art competitions.

P

Palguna, I Made Arya (B. 1976)
He studied at Institute Seni Indonesia, Yogyakarta. His exhibitions were in Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Denmark and Bali. His artworks were once selected as the best work on Asia Pacific Nokia Art awards version and one of Phillip Morris Art Award semi finalist.

Paulides, Hendrik (1892-1967)
He was a pupil of the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam and was taught by K.van Leeuwen. He visited Java the first time in 1922. His journey resulted in an impressive series of paintings back in Netherlands. His works show the stylistic characteristic of the contemporary art deco style. He travelled to Java and Bali once again in 1929.

Pedersen, Hugo Vildfred Von (B.1870)
Born in Copenhagen (Denmark), 25 January 1870.He was a pupil of the academy of arts in Copenhagen. His traveller also visited Indonesia, travelling throught Java and Sumatra. He wrote a book, whisch is illustrated with reproductions after his paintings, water-colours drawings : 'Door den Oost-Indische Archipel' (Haarlem, 1902). Eight of his Javanese paintings were used to illustrated J.F.Scheltema's 'Peeps at Many Lands, Java' (London, 1926). The artist often signed his work 'Hugo V.P.' Exhibition : Jakarta, Netherlandsch-Indische Kunskring, September 1920.

Pekerti, Bunga Jeruk Permata (B. 1972)
Born in Solo, Central Java in 1972. She studied at
ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta. She has held her solo exhibition in Indonesia and other countries, such as Russia and Germany.

Pekik, Djoko (B. 1938)
He studied painting under Trubus and Hendra Gunawan at ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta. Due to his involvement with LEKRA, he was detained in 1966 and he stopped painting. He became active again in painting around 80s and participated in various exhibitions in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, USA, and Japan.He paints genre scenes of the common people.

Pirous, Abdul Djalil (B. 1932)
Born in Meulaboh, Aceh. Pirous graduated from the Faculty of Arts, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 1964 and continued his study at Rochester Institute of Technology, USA, majoring in Arts and Graphic Designs. He has received various awards including Best Graphic Designs Art from Napel Art Show, New York in 1970, Best Painting at Indonesian Biennial in 1974, Silver Medal at International Arts Exhibition I in Seoul, South Korea in 1984 and an Arts Award from the Indonesian Government in 1985. He now actively works as a professor in ITB. Besides teaching, he also acts as a curator for various museums and exhibitions, both in Indonesian and overseas. A book on him, “A.D. Pirous: Vision, Faith and a Journey in Indonesian Art, 1955-2002”, was published in 2002.

Pramudiyanto, Bambang (B. 1965)
He once studied at the STSRI ASRI art school which is now known as ISI Yogyakarta, but then he decided not to finish this formal education. He has participated in group exhibition in Bali and Jakarta.

Probo (B. 1964)
He graduated from the Indonesian Art Institute (ISI), Yogyakarta in 1987. He has won several art awards and was one of the finalists in the Philip Morris Group of Companies Indonesian Art Awards in 1995.

Purnomo, Pupuk Daru (B. 1964)
Graduated from ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta in 1987. He received the prize for Best Painting, Dies Natalis VII and the Pratisara Affandi Adhi Karya awarded by ISI Yogyakarta. He has had solo and group exhibitions in Singapore and throughout Indonesia.

Purwanto, Susilo Budi (B. 1966)
He graduated from ISI / Indonesian Institute of Fine Arts in 1995. In 1996, he became the finalist of Phillip Morris Art Awards. The same achievement he got in 1999.

Rahadian, Redy (B. 1973)
He studied at Institute Saint Joseph Brussels, Mecanique Garage Department. He participated in few exhibition in Jakarta. He received award in 2003 “Tender Sculptures, Sun Plaza”, Medan.

Rahman, Amang (1931 – 2001)
Rahman was once a member of the Surabaya Art Committee and the founder of Surabaya Art Institute. This surrealist painter often explored religious themes in his paintings. He received an award at Biennial Paintings VIII from the Jakarta Arts Institute. A book on him “Ambang Cakrawala” was published in 2001.

Rees, Ecoline Adrienne Van (1890-1973)
The artist, who spent her youth in Indonesia, married a Mr. MacNeill in 1911 and participated in some exhibitions organized by the ‘Netherlandsch – Indische Kunsktring’ in Jakarta between 1910 and 1919. Two striking drawings by her hand are reproduced in ‘Weekblad voor Indie’ (no. 1, 19 April 1914). In 1919 she came to The Netherlands, where she was taught by B.P. Schregel. She illustrated a children’s book about Indonesia by M.C. van Zeggelen, ‘De fabel van het dwerghert’ (Amsterdam, 1928). Painter, draughtsman, well – known ceramist and graphic artist.

Regig, I Ketut (B. 1919)
He had started paintings since he was 15 years old. He was a member of the Pita Maha Artists’ association and was also mentored by Rudolf Bonnet and Walter Spies. His works also had similar themes but the characters were usually not humans but frogs which are dressed and behave like humans. This distinct characteristic thus make his works weird. Mysterious and humourous qualities.

Rosid(B. 1969)
Born in Ciamis, West Java, 1969. He studied art at SOS Bandung (1989 - 1991), studied painting at Rudy Pranadjaja, Bandung (1994) and Art Workshop at Bengkel Seni Sunaryo, Bandung (2001 - 2002). He joined the R-66 studio. He held his one-man shows at Segenggam Peduli Studio, Bandung (1999).

Ruchyat, Cucu (B. 1970)
The artist started his debut in the art as a top ten finalist in the Indonesian Two Dimensional Fine Arts National Competition 2003/Asean Art Awards or before known as the Indonesian Phillip Morris Art Award.

Dadang Rukmana (B. 1964)
Born at Bandung in 1964. He start studied painting from 1982 to 1985 in Studio Pendidikan Seni Rupa Rangga Gempol Bandung/ Rangga Gempol Art Studio Education under the guidance of Barli Sasmitawinata. He start his career as a painter and lived in Ubud, Bali. He has been participated in solo and group exhibition in Indonesia, and he currently live in Malang, East Java.

Rusli (1922-2005)
He taught at Taman Siswa Jakarta from 1945 - 1949. In 1951 he was appointed as an art instructor at ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta. His works were exhibited in Brazil and Italy. He was selected in 1970 as a life member of the Jakarta Academy.

Rustamadji (1932 - 1990)
He lived in Surabaya and had actively painted since the 50's, his works were in the private collection of the late President Soekarno.

Sadali, Ahmad (1924-1987)
Born in Garut, Java, he studied at the Bandung Institute of Technology in 1953, later he returned to teach there. He also studied at Iowa State University and New York’s Art Students League from 1956-1957, on a grant been awarded by the Rockefeller Foundation. He was awarded the Anugerah Seni Art Award by the Indonesian government.

Sagan, Men (B. 1948)

Sagito, Ivan (B. 1957)
He graduated from ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta. He is famous for his usage of a surrealistic idiom and many of his works are based on themes that depict the reality, activity, and life of ordinary Javanese society. His works often give the impression of being colossal and full of mystery, which invite the viewers to wander in their imagination. He has obtained various awards, including a prize for the Jakarta Biennial. He has also participated in various art exhibitions around the world.

Sahputra, Handiwirman (B. 1975)
Born in Bukittinggi on January. Graduate of the Indonesian Institute of Arts (ISI), 1996. The Selected Solo Exhibitions at 1999 in Yogyakarta "Benda Art Space", "Provocation Object", Lontar Gallery in Jakarta. And the selected group exhibition,in 1998 by Philip Morris Indonesia Art Award, Jakarta ASEAN Art Award, Hanoi Vietnam. Actively exhibited in Indonesia. Part of Kelompok Seni Rupa Jendela (The Window Visual Art Group) group of Young artist from west Sumatra. Was cited as Artist of the year 2004 in Tempo Magazine.

Salm, Abram or Abraham (Ab) (1801-1876)
Abraham Salm born in Amsterdam, 29 October 1801. Self-taught artist, who came to Indonesia and settled in Surabaya, Java, as a merchant. Later he owned tobacco plantations in Malang. The artist spent a total of twenty-nine years in Indonesia. Draughtsman and painter of numerous, mainly small landscapes in Java. Twenty-four of his paintings were used for a set of chromolithographs made by J. C. Greive jr. and published by F. Buffa & Zonen (Amsterdam, 1865-1872) under the title ‘Java. Naar schilderijen en teekenigen van A. Salm. Died in Amsterdam, 4 December 1876

Sanjaya, Tisna (B. 1958)
Tisna studied at the Fine Art and Design Departement – Intitute of Technology Bandung and HBK Braunschweig, Germany. He has participated in a group exhibition of Graphic Arts of Three Cities : Jakarta, Bandung and Yogyakarta in 1999.

Santosa, Sigit (B. 1964)
He graduated from the Indonesian Arts Academy Yogyakarta in 1993. A number of awards he has received including the best painting at the Indonesian Arts Academy dies natalis in 1990, a finalist for the best ten paintings from the Phillip Morris Art Awards in 1994 and the best painting at the Yogyakarta Biennale IV in 1994.

Sarawan, Koeboe (B. 1961)

He graduated from ISI / Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Yogyakarta and has also studied batik in Solo. He has participated in group exhibitions in Surabaya, Malang, Jakarta, Solo, Bali and Yogyakarta.

Sardjito (B. 1965)

He studied at Cinematography, Jakarta Institute of Art (IKJ) and he also studied sculpture at ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta. His works were exhibited in group exhibitions in Yogyakarta and Jakarta.

Sastranegara, Yani Mariani (B. 1955)

She graduated from IKJ / Jakarta Institute of Art. Since 1992 she has had several joint exhibitions in Jakarta and Bandung. She had participated in the creation of the diorama ‘Jakarta Tempo Doeloe Hingga Kini’ at Anjungan DKI, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah.

Sasmitawinata, Barli (B. 1921)
Firstly learned to paint from a Dutch painter Jos Pluimentz and an Italian painter Luigi Nobili. Together with other artists, such as Affandi, Hendra Gunawan, Soedarso and Wahdi Sumanta, he established a painting association called Lima Bandung (The Five Group in Bandung). In 1951, he studied at the Academie Grande La Chauimere in Paris and in the following year, he continued to the High School of Arts (Akademie Voor Beeldende Kunsten) in Amsterdam, which he graduated in 1956. On his return to Indonesia, he founded Rangga Gempol Art Studio in Bandung in 1958, which generates many painter to name a few. His work of arts has been exhibit not only in indonesia, but also in overseas. Now, most of his works are exhibited in his private museum, Museum Barli, which is established in 1992.

Sayahdikumullah, Dikdik (B. 1973)
Born on August 22, 1973 in Majalengka, studied at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Bandung (BFA; 1997) (MFA; 2001).

Sayers, Charles Eugène Henri (1901 - 1943)
Born in Kendal, Java, 14 October 1901. He was a student of the ‘Rijksacademie’ in Amsterdam and was taught at the ‘Acadèmie des Beaux Arts’ in Paris. He participated in several exhibitions organized by the ‘Bataviasche Kunstkring’ in Jakarta in the 1930s. His style can be described as realistic in his early works, later becoming expressionistic, but always full of vigor and magic. An important collection of his Indonesian work is in the’Tropenmuseum’ in Amsterdam. Died in Thambyazajat (siam), 15 November 1943.

Schmidt, Rudolf (B. 1930)
Born in Dieburg, Germany. He studied in several art academies in Germany and Italy, including the Academy of “Belle Arti” in Roma under the famous Bartolli. He became later in 1951 an art teacher at the Academy of Kalsruhe and then the Academy of Frankfurt from 1974 until 1986. Married to an Indonesian lady, the artist decided since 1986 until now to spend every year several months in his wife’s homeland.

Setiadikara, Chusin (B. 1949)
Formerly learned at Rangga Gempol Studio under the direction of Barli from 1970 – 1980. He later moved to Bali and lived there since. He received the Phillip Morris awards in 1996 and in every painting always strongly expressed realist element which he mastered. He is rather unproductive for his paintings were very rare.

Shen , Xiao Tong (B. 1968)
He graduated from the Faculty of Lithography of the Art Academy in Sichuan. In 1997, his works were exhibited in a group exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum.

Shi, Hu (B. 1942)
As a Red Guard, he was responsible for producing propaganda posters. At different times, he trained and taught art at various Beijing and Zhejiang Art Institutes, before working as art director at People’s Fine Arts Publishing House in Beijing. In 1977 he set off on an extensive tour of 13 African countries and upon his return to China created waves with his series of African sketches. By 1982 he had earned a solo exhibition at the Nanjing Art Museum, and starting from 1987 was introduced to an international audience with his exhibition in Hong Kong. Thereafter, he achieved very successful overseas exhibitions in Hong Kong, Switzerland, USA, Canada, Singapore, Macau and Jakarta. During the aftermath of the Tiananmen incident, he moved to Macau and painted from there, while his art prospered throughout South East Asia.

Sidharta Soegijo, Gregorius (B. 1932)
He studied at ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta and Jan Van Eyck Academy in Maastricht, The Netherlands. His works have been exhibited in several countries such as Poland, India, Japan, Norway, Singapore, Canada, Philippine and Thailand. He received several awards and some of his sculptures were installed in several parks and plazas in several countries. He taught at ASRI, Yogyakarta from 1958 to 1964. Afterwards he lectured at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Now, he works and lives in Yogyakarta.

Sinaga, Dolorosa (B. 1952)
She studied at ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta in 1977. In 1990 she went to study at Maryland University, USA. Her works have been exhibited in Jakarta.

Smit, Arie (B. 1916)

Soedarsono, Srihadi (B. 1931)
He was one of the youngest members of the Seniman Indonesia Muda (Young Indonesian Artist Association) in Yogyakarta in the late 40s. He received his Master of Arts degree from Ohio State University in the USA in 1962. He has had several exhibitions in Indonesia, USA, Australia and Brazil, and has received cultural awards from both the Australian and Indonesian government.

Snel, Han (1925-1998)
He was trained as a graphic artist and sent to Indonesia in 1946 as a soldier to fight against the nationalist, he defected to their side. He lived in Bali since 1950 and became an Indonesian citizen. His graphic paintings featured stylized women in rich colors, as well as geometric abstractions.

Soedibio (B. 1912)
He was one member of Persagi in Jakarta 1940. He founded Seniman Muda Indonesia in Madiun 1940 together with S. Sudjojono, Trisno Soemardjo, Suninsyo and D. Suradji. Joined Sanggar Puring in Surabaya in 1967 in association with Wiwiek Hidayat, Karyono and Tedja Suminar. Become a member of the Himpunan Budaya Surakarta in 1970. Conducted an exhibition with Soediardjo at the Taman Ismail Marzuki in 1976.

Soetopo (B. 1931)
Soetopo was educated at the Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia (ASRI) Yogyakarta.. He was trained by Hendra Gunawan, Sudarso and Trubus S. Since 1954, he has been active in exhibitions in major cities around Indonesia. Besides paintings, he also frequently participated in the production of battle monuments, such as the March 1st Monument in Yogyakarta, Palagan Battleground Monument in Ambarawa, Brawijaya Monument in Surabaya, and Jamin Ginting Monument in Medan, Monument of Struggle in Sibolga, North Sumatra.

Soeparto (B. 1929)
His father is also a painter. He learned to paint in Bandung at the age of 15 together with Popo Iskandar. In 1947 he moved to Solo and joined with Seniman Indonesia Muda (SIM) under S.Sudjojono. He received the Award in Arts from the Government of Indonesia in 1971.

Soekarno (1901-1970)
He is not only a lover of art, but also an authoritative connoisseur of fine art; in fact, he is a real artist him self. For years he has observed the development of art, chosen and collected the works of art of the artists of Indonesia and other countries, which collection now forms a garden of culture that reflects not only his lofty personality but also human civilization of the 20th century.

Sonnega, Auke Cornelis (1910-1963)
He studied at the Kunstnijverheidschool in Amsterdam. In 1935, he arrived in Indonesia as a professional artist, and did much painting in Medan and also in Bali where he met Spies and Bonnet. In 1959 he returned to the Netherlands.

Song, Yong Hong (B. 1966)
The artist graduated from the Printmaking Department of the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. He currently teaches at the Beijing Institute of Technology. He has been actively participating in groups exhibition in China, Australia, U.K., Austria, Poland, Denmark, Spain, Germany, USA, Singapore and Finland. His first solo exhibition was held in 1995 in Hongkong.

Strasser, Roland (1895-1974)
Son of the sculptor A. Strasser. He was an art student in Munich, Germany before travelling to Indonesia where he lived for many years. Well-known painter, draughtsman, and watercolourist in an expressionistic style. Many of his paintings are in the collection of President Soekarno.

Suandi, I Ketut (B. 1932)
He learned painting at a very young age, and become more active at Sanggar Kamboja, Bali. He started to become a professional painter in 1957 and since then he had participated actively in group exhibitions.

Subani Irfani, Rahmat (1949 – 2003)
During 1968 – 1971 he studied at
Indonesia Art Academy (ASRI) and also took IPWI – PPPI advertising course and Ad-non Ad Course in Jakarta. He often used mixed media employing visual tricks that can fool the eyes. He has actively participated in numerous group exhibitions since 1995 until 2003 in Jakarta, Bogor, Bali, Yogyakarta, and Japan.

Subrata, I Nyoman (B. 1959)
Born in 1959 as a son of Made Trungking. He learned the skills of traditional wood carving from Ketut Jedang at the age of 10. At the age of 13, he began as an apprentice to his uncle, Ketut Tulak.

Sudarnaputra, I.Wayan (B. 1976)
He studied at the
ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta and considered as one creative and active painter. Many exhibitions and awards he achieved, including the best ISI art award in 1996, finalist of the Philip Morris Indonesia Art Awards in 1998, also the top 10 of Philip Morris Indonesia Art Awards in 1999.

Sudarso (B. 1914)
Student of Affandi, Barli, Wahdi, and Hendra Gunawan. He has been a lecturer at ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta and has participated in numerous exhibitions in Jakarta,Yogyakarta, Denpasar and Bandung.

Sudiarta, I Wayan (B. 1969)
Born at Peliatan Ubud Bali. He learned traditional Ubud style painting from famous painter such as Wayan Gandera, Wayan Djujul, Nyoman Daging and Wayan Barwa. In 1993 he graduated from Art Department of FKIP UNUD, Singaraja, Bali. In 1994 he became a lecturer at Art Department of FKIP UNUD Singaraja Bali until now. He has held many solo exhibitions in Bali, Jakarta and Singapore.

Sudjojono, Sindutomo (1913-1986)
From 1925 he studied painting with Yudhokusumo and in 1935 he continued to study painting with Mas Pirngadi and the Japanese artist Chioyoji Yazaki. He received further education at Taman Siswa Teachers' College in Yogyakarta. In 1938 he and Agus Djaja co-founded PERSAGI / Indonesian Painters' Union. In the 50s he worked closely with the communist sponsored cultural organization LEKRA / People's Cultural Institute. His expulsion from the Communist Party in 1958 saved him from the communist purge in 1965. In 1970 he was awarded recognition in the arts by the Indonesian Government. His work has been exhibited in The Netherlands and at the Fukuoka Art Museum in Japan in 1980. In Indonesia, his work has been exhibited in Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta and Denpasar.

Sugeng, Pratomo (B. 1946)
He studied painting under the guidance of Dullah in 1973 – 1979. He has participated in several exhibitions in Jakarta, Solo, Yogyakarta, and Bali. In 2002 he became one of the Indofood Art Award Competition finalists.

Suhardi, Gambiranom (B. 1928)
He studied at ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta during 1950 – 1955. In 1955 he had participated in the “Afro-Asia” exhibition in Bandung. He also worked on murals and dioramas for hotels, government buildings, monuments and museum.

Sujatno, Koempoel (1912-1987)
Born in Ngawi, East Java. He is RA. Prawirodidjo’s generation who was known as Pangeran Sentot Ali Basah Prawirodirjo. Graduated from HIS (Hollandsch Inlandsche School) or Technical School, makes him familiar with perspective and he also a student of 2 famous artists, G.P. Adolfs and Willem van der Does. His works were more than 2500 and most of them has been damaged and destroyed, some was abroad especially in The Netherlands.

Sukadana, I Made (B. 1966)
Studied at Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta. His sketches were considered best during 1987-1988, received awards from Sanggar Dewata Indonesia in 1992, and also a finalist of Indonesia Art Awards in 1997 and 1998.

Suklu, I Wayan Sujana (B. 1967)
I Wayan Sujana Suklu was born and raised among farmers in Klungkung, Bali. While he lived and followed the traditional life in his village, Suklu’s childhood was also filled with painting and dancing lessons given by his father. Suklu’s father was an undagi, a maker of traditional Balinese houses, who was als a skillful painter and dancer. Suklu then continued to study at the SMSR Denpasar, the fineart college in Denpasar, specializing on the traditional panting of Ubud. After working as a relief-maker, Suklu went to study the visual art at the STSI Denpasar, the fine-art institute at Denpasar. He then graduated and become a lecturer at the institute.

Sukmantoro, Jeihan (B. 1938)
He studied at the Institute of Technology – Bandung (ITB). He uses dark shapes for eyes, and limited pallete of monochromes in depicting his abstracted figures. Together with Dr. Sudjoko, in 1978 he established Studio Seni Rupa Bandung (Bandung Fine Arts Studio). He is a member of the World Art and Culture Exchange Association based in New York, U.S.A.

Sumadidjaja, Harijadi (1921 - 1997)
This self-taught painter started painting and sculpting at the age of seventeen. During World War II, he became a meteorologist for the Allied Forces and he was a member of the 17th Brigade of the Indonesian Student Armed Forces. He joined Seni Rupa Masyarakat 1946 along with Hendra, Rusli, Affandi and became its secretary. In 1965 he was sent by President Soekarno to do research on museums in Mexico City. This mural painter was a member of the Organisacion Internacional de Muralistos del Mundo in South America.

Sunaryo(B. 1943)
He graduated from the sculpture department of the Institute Technology Bandung (ITB) in 1969, and continued his study in Carrarra, Italy. He is also well known as a painter. He launched his museum, Selasar Sunaryo in Bandung, in 1998.

Sunaryo, Eddy (B. 1951)
Born in Banyuwangi, 1951. He obtained a Bachelor of Art from STSRI ASRI, Yogyakarta. He has actively participated in several solo and group exhibitions since 1975. He received in 1975 “ Pratisara Affandi Adhi Karya “ award and in 1978 he received again “ The Best Student “ award.

Supono, Ogeng Heru (1937-1991)
He learned more about the art of painting in Bali in the 50s. Upon his return to Surabaya, he founded Akademi Seni Rupa Surabaya (Surabaya Fine Art Academy). Apart from several solo exhibitions in Surabaya and Jakarta, he also participated in group exhibitions in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and USA. His works are in the collections of Neka Art Museum in Bali and The Fine Arts and Ceramics Museum in Jakarta.

Supria, Dede Eri (B. 1956)
Originally from Jakarta, Dede Eri Supria was a pupil of Dukut Hendranoto (Pak Ooq, a famous art teacher living in Jakarta in the 60s and 70s). In 1974 he left his hometown to enter ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta. His name first emerged in the Indonesian art scene in 1976. He has received several awards for his works, Jakarta Biennale 1981. Today, he is considered an influential propagator of super-realist painting in Indonesia. He has participated in many group shows as well as solo exhibitions.

Sutawijaya, Putu (B. 1971)
He first studied painting at the High School of Fine Art in Denpasar and later continued his study at the Indonesia Art Institute (ISI) Yogyakarta. He has won awards for the best watercolor painting and the best sketch from ISI in 1995.

Sterren, John Van Der (B. 1938)
He spent his childhood in the tea plantation in Indonesia. After the second World War, he moved to New Zealand and settled down in Wellington. His interest in Arts brought him to be a member of New Zealand Academy of Fine Art and since 1966, he often went overseas to painting. In 1983, he come back to Indonesia and worked there. He has held so many single and group exhibitions. Now he lives in an area close to Borobudur Temple and has a studio there. He drew his inspirations from old buildings and panoramic views which he saw during his tours.

Sumadiyasa, I Made (B. 1971)
Born at Tabanan, Bali. He started studied in the High School of Fine Art (SMSR), Gianyar Bali from 1987 to 1991. He continued at the Indonesia Institute of Art (ISI), Yogyakarta from 1992 to 1997. He started his first exhibition together with the group at Taman Budaya Art Centre,Denpasar in 1990 and then held his first solo exhibition entitled Journeys at Neka Art Museum, Komaneka Fine Art Gallery and Bamboo Gallery, in 1998.

Suwage, Agus (B. 1959)
Studied graphic design at the Institute of Technology Bandung from 1979 to 1986. Upon graduation, he worked as a freelance illustrator in Jakarta. He participates in Ini Baroe Seni Roepa, Ini Seni Roepa Baroe, at the Franch Cultural Centre and Bandung Youth Centre, Bandung (1984), the Sixth Jakarta Biennale (1985) and the Ninth Jakarta Biennale (1993), both at Taman Ismail Marzuki. His work was also included in the Contemporary Art of the Non- aligned Countries, National Gallery, Jakarta In 1995. In 1996, his work was selected as one of ten winners of the Yayasan Seni Rupa Indonesia – Philip Morris Indonesian Art Awards, and entered into the ASEAN Art Awards in Bangkok, Thailand. Solo exhibitons of his works have been held at Cemeti Gallery in Yogyakarta (1996) and Galeri Lontar in Jakarta (1997).
