Dake Jr, Carel Lodewijk (1886 - 1946)

He was taught by his father, the artist C.L. Dake, and also studied painting with E. Pieters, A.M. Gorter and H.M. Krabbe in Laren, The Netherlands. He visited Indonesia in 1912, and spent time in Java, Sumatra and Bali. He created three large dioramas depicting Indonesia for the world fair of San Francisco in 1915. He had solo exhibitions in Bogor and Bandung in 1919 and in Jakarta in 1933.

De Ruiter de Witt, Maria (B. 1947)

The artist specialized in the pastel technique after receiving classes from the Dutch draughtsman Sierk Schroeder. In September 1988 she was awarded with the first prize of Societe des Pastellistes de France', followed by the Prix d'Honneur du Salon International du Pastel in 1989. In 1992, she was appointed Maitre du Pastel by the Societe des Pastellistes. In the same year, she won a bronze medal of the Societe des Artistes Francais.

Dezentje, Ernest (1885-1972)

Self-taught Dutch artist of French origin, born in Jatinegara, Java. He was a member of the Bataviasche Kunstkring and participated in several of their exhibitions. He had solo exhibitions in Jakarta in 1936, 1937, 1938 and 1939. After World War II he became an Indonesian citizen. Former President Soekamo presented his paintings to President Tito of Yugoslavia and Russian leaders.

Dhay, W.T (B. 1937)

Born in Lumajang, East Java. He was a realist-impressionist painter around 60’s who then learned oil painting from late artist Nurdin BS. With fine brushstrokes and strong colours, his object mostly depicted the crowd of traditional markets, as well as the life of fishermen and farmers within. He also likes to paint landscapes as the beauty of his surrounding nature.

Djamin, Nasjah (1924-1999)

Educated at MULO, he started painting in 1946 in Yogyakarta during the Indonesian Struggle for Independence. He went to Yogyakarta because he was attracted by the works of Sudjojono, Affandi and Kartono Yudhokusumo. In 1946 he joined the Pasukan Obor art studio where he produced propaganda posters and joined Sudjojono’s Seniman Indonesia Muda / Young Indonesian Artists where he studied under Sudjojono, Affandi and Sudarso. He moved to Jakarta in 1949 – 1952, where he attended Gabungan Pelukis Indonesia / Indonesian Painter’s Group and worked as an illustrator for the Balai Pustaka publishing house. After his return to Yogyakarta in 1952, he worked as a civil servant in the Art Division / Directorate, Department of Education and Culture. He participated in national and international exhibitions: he had his first solo exhibition in 1960 at the Embassy of Argentina in Jakarta, and another in 1978 at the Taman Ismail Marzuki Art Center in Jakarta. He was also a writer, poet, novelist and writer of children’s book as well as being an expert in designing stage décor for theatre, film and television productions.

Djaya, Otto (1916 – 2002)

He was born in Rangkasbitung, Banten in 1916. He learned to paint at the PERSAGI atelier during the Dutch colonial period. His elder brother Agus Djaya was at that time chairman of this first Indonesian Painters Union. During the Japanese occupation he took part in the armed struggle for the independence as major in the Indonesian army. After incapacitated as an army officer, he retreated from the army and returned to his original habitat: “the world of fine art.” After the proclamation he got the opportunity to study in Amsterdam, Holland. He also made a complete study tour around Europe. He also participated in the grand prix de peinture de Monaco in Monte Carlo, and the Biennale of Sao Paolo in Brazil. He often took part in several solo and joint exhibitions in Indonesia as well as abroad.

Djirna, I Made (B. 1957)

He studied at ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta. He is a member of the Sanggar Dewata Indonesians Kelompok Tujuh. He received the Lempad Prize and Pratisara Affandi Adhi Karya. His works range from pure abstraction to simplified figures inspired by primitive art. He has participated in exhibitions in the Netherlands, USA, Singapore and Switzerland.

Djunaedi, Fadjar (B. 1970)
The artist studied painting at IKIP Malang and graduated in 1994. He has participated in several exhibitions in Jakarta, Bandung, Malang, Surabaya, and Bali.

Do, Duy Tuan(B. 1949)
Born in Thuan Thien Hue, Vietnam, 1954. He graduated from Hue's Fine Arts College. He has won the Arts National Award 1996-2000 and won the Vietnam Arts Award 2001 / Asian 2002-Philip Morris, participated numerous painting exhibition in Vietnam and abroad, solo exhibition in Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City, Fine Arts Museum of Hanoi and various private collections.

Does, Willem Jan Pieter Van Der (1889-1966)
Born in Retterdam, 20 April 1889. He came to Indonesia ca 1918 as a civil servant to survey the country. In this function he traveled all over the archipelago. The artist participated in several group-exhibitions in Jakarta, Medan and Surabaya between 1918 and 1938.

Dono, Heri (B. 1960)
He studied at ISI / Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta from 1980-1987. He also studied shadow puppetry with Sukasman in Yogyakarta from 1987-1988. He has had solo and group exhibitions in Indonesia, Netherlands, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, USA and the UK. He received an award as Best Young Painter from the Alliance Francaise and Bandung Institute of Technology in 1989; Lempad Prize from Sanggar Dewata Indonesia in 1992; Prince Claus Award in 1988; UNESCO Prize for International Art Biennial, Shanghai, China in 2000; and the 2nd Annual Enku Grand Awards, Gifu Prefectural Government, Japan in 2002. He is internationally known for his contemporary installation work.

Dooijewaard, Willem (1892-1980)
Born in Amsterdam, He was educated at the Amsterdam Arts and Crafts School. He first visited Indonesia in 1913 where he worked on a plantation in Sumatera. His second trip to Indonesia in 1919 bought him to Bali. Together with Roland Strasser, hespent over a year traveling through China, Mongolia, Japan and North Africa. Dooijewaard was a typical artist traveller who immersed him in the local cultures and who reached his highest artistic level when inspired by these different cultures.

Duatmika, I Made (B. 1970)
He studied art at the Indonesia Fine Art College (STSI) Denpasar, Bali. His first solo exhibition was held at Mon Décor Gallery, Jakarta in 1999. In 1993 he joined the KAMASRA group. He has exhibited his works in Australia, Holland and also won the Philip Morris Indonesia Art Awards.

Dullah(1919-1996)
He studied painting with Affandi and Sudjojono. During the late 40s he documented the Indonesian Revolution and Struggle for Independence through his paintings. In the 50s he was the official painter for Indonesia's first president, Soekarno. Dullah was also the first curator of Soekarno's art collection and he coordinated the publication of the first edition of the collection catalogue in 1956. He helped establishing Himpunan Budaya Surakarta / Surakarta Cultural Foundation in 1950. In 1988 he opened the Dullah Museum in Solo, which exhibits modern Indonesian paintings. His works had been shown in exhibitions in Indonesia and abroad, including a solo exhibition in Melbourne, Australia in 1977.

Dwihartanto, Arin (B. 1978)
He studied at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). He has intensely explorer the “body” as the subject matter for his artworks. In 1999 he received an award of ASEAN Philips Morris Art Award, National Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
